Peter Gardiner of This Is Ammunition posts back catalog

19th May, 2012

Peter Gardiner, the singer of This Is Ammunition, recently put up old demos from his band in Hong Kong, For No Reason, from 10 years ago, for free download, and for listening to (in case you’re not a big fan of downloading). Accordingly some fo these songs are featured in an upcoming film about Hong Kong called “97” (instead of political it’s cultural). Peter has been in various bands since school; For No Reason being one of them. He also played music regularly with Andrew Bautista and Gavin Ho around that time. Accordingly, Peter went on to tour with Low On Saturn around Europe thereafter, and after returning to Hong Kong, formed the bands The Dragon Army and then Gong Wu, before moving onto This Is Ammunition. Among these names, Peter revealed to me that one of the bands (I shall let him reveal in due time) will have a reunion. -b-

Acoustic music from Ronald Mo

19th May, 2012

From Fistiwave (pop/classic rock), to Superimposted Tritonic Motif (jazz rock), and also a band I’m less familiar with called “Up n Down Quintet”, guitarist Ronald Mo has been either a truly rocking guitarist to some, or a show-off to others. Now Ronald has set up a full artist web page on his own and have put up a few instrumental acoustic tracks, with a promise to his solo guitar project, which he promised as “Guitar – Singing = Ronald Mo”, so it appears future demos may have singing. Three of his instrumental tracks have been posted so you should experience them right there! -b-

Core In China project launching

15th May, 2012

According to the official information, the Core In China project is launched today, and while you’re reading this news, chances are it’s officially launched. Now this is a bit interesting because the download was already available in all the various channels including soundcloud, bandcamp, last.fm and Hong Kong’s own IndieMusicBox. Released by Rock In China Records, who have released quite a few online collections previously, Core In China is a free online compilation of Chinese Metalcore, Deathcore, Nintendocore, Hardcore and Screamo bands that have been selected via an open song submission process from January to May 2012. The 20 songs from all over China included three songs from Hong Kong, from King Ly Chee, Mensheng and Die In Velvet, and the beautiful cover design is by Joe Wu of Mensheng/King Ly Chee. And “Rock in China is promoting the compilation globally and first reviews have been posted in France, Australia, Shanghai and Beijing.” The album also features extensive interview in pdfs with the bands and a lot of info on ’core music in China. Go download now.

If you’re curious, here is what they say: “Rock in China’s vision is to become the world’s and the web’s largest online knowledge base about Chinese underground music in order to present the scene to the foreign world.” -b-

The Underground launches its 5th compilation

12th May, 2012

This is just very late and not very forgivable, but I just realized we having reported on one of the most important releases of Hong Kong’s indie music from The Underground. The Compilation CD 5 CD release show would be technically today … May 12 at Hard Rock Cafe, with the Party B on May 19. While every band in the line up is going to be very very important, I must say this compilation features two bands that have disappeared from sight for the longest time: Airtub and Audiotraffic. Keep watch on this story!

Bands in this compilation are:

Airtub
Audiotraffic
Beebob
eli
Intellectual Morons
Operator
ReOrientate
The Bollands
Who Shot Holga

As with any major even by The Underground, the launch event would have a lot of lucky draw gifts, including the exclusive Underground Zippo lighter. -b-

Another Cleen new song

11th May, 2012

After a dramatic entrance into the Hong Kong indie music arsenal, the duo Cleen released a brand new song “Freya” (a Norse goddess and fairly popular name if you check your internet). Coming from two multi-instrumentalists with classical background (I’m guessing Aileen Alonso is also classically trained), these are stunning sophisticated tunes I would venture to describe as avant-garde. Acoustic guitar in this tune is by Sandro Cagnin, an Italian artist by the Chinese name of 飛翔 currently living in Hong Kong. Cleen are putting together songs constantly, quietly saying they won’t be performing live until they have enough songs, and openly stating that they would be releasing an EP of some sort in due time. -b-

Chochukmo add show … before date … not after

11th May, 2012

If you have not bought tickets to see Chochukmo on their single “Goodnight” release show, you are so lucky, because now you can see them and get the CD one day earlier! They have added one more date ahead of the original date! Tickets for their May 26 show is all gone, and I assume you are so unlucky if you have to watch them on Friday instead of Saturday. -b-

Rock The Message stop-motion MV

8th May, 2012

I quite remember The Message started out as a Christian band but have since no longer brandish that “message”. We have reported their release of songs, and they consistently give us a great tune every few months. They just put out a stop-motion MV of their new song “血肉”, written by singer Lap Wong. And the stop-motion drawing is also by Lap Wong — looking really good. The song itself is about abandoned children. Another strongly recommended! -b-

On the new Tigerbombers album release show

8th May, 2012

We’re all waiting, expecting this, and it finally comes. Tigerbombers have announced the album release show; note: not CD release show. The album would be free to all of you, you, you, you, and the rest of you because some guys have paid for it. I have been told it would be highlighted by a lot of promotions like logos/graphics splashed onto various artists. So get yourself ready. The show is supported by Laura Palmer, Snoblind and Head Clowns. It heralds a new break in album releases regarding whether you sell the album really hard, collect contributions to making the album in an cake sale, or on line. -b-

ni.ne.mo “shades of…” music video

7th May, 2012

OK, if you’ve not been introduced, you pronounce like “minimal”. The indie/electro-pop band, ni.ne.mo, who took the attention of everyone with the song “we are dogs” in response to a certain professor kong (remember this guy is himself a controversial figure). ni.ne.mo was really formed much earlier but stayed away for some time. They have just released a very crafty video of their song “shades of…”. The video features a browless Angelica Hung with some scenes that may or may not attract attention of censors. It’s a pretty heavy song (the message, I mean), so get yourself ready.

They’ve actually done a whole bunch of pretty decent music videos, like this one, and this one. -b-

The Yours new album ready after an MV

1st May, 2012

The Yours put out an MV of the song “Over”, their second 2012 music video, a while back, and have just publicized the cover of the upcoming album. The cover indicates that the title would be “The Way We Were”, and includes Gwyneth, who is currently not in Hong Kong, nor in the line up when they perform, although, she would be back in June, which seems to indicate she could be around for an upcoming album released. To me, this album must be the most anticipated Hong Kong indie release (from Lona Records) in 2012.

The video was filmed on grainy Super-8 (which, actually, is already digital …) featuring some very art-house/indie shots. Watching it is really quite warm, on top of that amazing back-to-root shoegaze/alternative feel.

Having said that, two other bands have mentioned they are releasing an album at their 10th anniversary this year, and you can work on your arithmetic to figure out who they are. -b-
